The list of cities starting with the most expensive is called the TripIndex and it is expected to help you take informed decisions about your next vacation and budget for it realistically. The cost of an evening out has been calculated on the basis of combined costs for two people of one night in a four-star hotel, with cocktails, a two-course dinner with a bottle of wine and taxi fare home.
London emerged at the top of the TripIndex list with an evening out in the city costing an average of £330.45. London has jumped to the top spot this year with the British Pound gaining marginally against the Euro which has been under pressure. However, for the Americans London has become a more attractive choice as the American Dollar has appreciated against the British currency. European cities have generally crowded the top ten positions in the TripIndex. Oslo occupies the second spot in the list and is quite close to London with and average cost of £320.
Last year a similar survey had place Paris on top as the most expensive city in the world. With Euro loosing ground to the British Pound, the French capital has become more accessible for the British traveler as Paris is placed fourth in the final list released. Zurich, another European city is occupying the third place in the list.
New York which is placed sixth is the only American city to find a place in top ten. Sydney on ninth and Singapore on tenth are the only other non European cities in the top ten. There are cheaper options also available in Europe. Budapest in Hungary is the cheapest European city where a night out costs £123. Predictably it is the Asian cities that dominate the cheaper end of the list. Hanoi in Vietnam takes the top spot as it was found to be the least expensive city with a night out costing under £90. Beijing, Bangkok and Kula Lumpur are the other Asian cities bringing up the rear of the list. The bulk of the cost of a night out is the rent for the hotel room. The cheapest hotel rooms were found in Bangkok with an average tariff of only £51.68. To see it in right perspective you must compare it to the London figure which is £230.39 a night.
